Director of Communications and Operations
Sonia Ali is a writer, editor, and cultural worker based in Los Angeles, currently serving as the Director of Communications and Operations at Active Cultures.
Previously, she was the Managing Editor at the Los Angeles Review of Books and Assistant Director of the LARB Publishing Workshop, where she cultivated emerging voices in publishing. Prior to that, Sonia served as Editor and Literary Programs Manager at Mizna, a a critical platform for contemporary literature, film, art, and cultural production centering the work of Arab and Southwest Asian and North African artists.
Her past projects include serving on the organizing committee for the Portland Zine Symposium, coordinating the RAWI+Mizna National Gathering, and organizing WET HOT ARAB AMERICAN SUMMER, a week-long workshop for Arab American writers across poetry, fiction, and screenwriting held in Los Angeles. She was a 2018 LARB Publishing Workshop Fellow and a 2016 alumnus of the Voices of Our Nations Arts Foundation (VONA).
Sonia’s writing has been featured in Electric Literature, Oregon Humanities magazine, and other publications. She holds a BA in English and Creative Writing from Portland State University.
