In Conversation, October 30, 2020

Witch's Kitchen is a two part roving cabaret of conversations, screenings, performances, and culinary experiments. Organized by artist Shana Lutker, Witch's Kitchen expands on the generative intersection of performance, exile, and communal nourishment through the legacy of performer Valeska Gert (1892-1978).

Witch's Kitchen: Part One presents a series of online events hosted by Shana, taking up themes and strategies put in play by Valeska Gert. The inaugural program brings Mexico City-based artist Adriana Lara together with Shana for a digital show-and-tell and conversation about the power of performance, the construction of identity, and approaching performance as a way of life. From the performances of Jessy Bulbo, to the music of Los Cogelones, to Adriana's project, Red Social, the two artists explore the ways in which performance and life bleed into another, blurring the boundaries just as Gert once had.

Shana Lutker is a Los Angeles-based artist. Shaped by the archives of psychoanalysis and surrealism, her interdisciplinary work in sculpture, performance, writing, and installation foregrounds an unstable relationship between subjects, memory, and history. Recent exhibitions include Current LA:FOOD, the LA public art triennial; Virginia Woolf: an exhibition inspired by her writings at Tate St. Ives; and An Analphabet at Vielmetter Los Angeles. She was included in the Whitney Biennial in 2014 and Performa in 2013, and she has had solo exhibitions at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and Perez Art Museum Miami.

Adriana Lara is a visual artist from Mexico City. Her work is concerned with systems, and her projects have charted social and conceptual networks. Her most recent collaborative project is called RED SOCIAL, an agency that brings together visual, sound, and performing arts, through the production of events and itinerant platforms, with a common interest in live music, experimenting with an interconnection of media and disciplines, and the convergence of identities in a given context.
